Simplified Path to Teaching
A new program simplifies the pathway for experienced professionals to become certified teachers in Idaho and help solve a teacher shortage.

New Route Helps Create Teachers
Before this new program, those interested could only become teachers through a traditional route — finishing a bachelor’s in a four-year education program; via Teach for America; or another State Department of Education-approved alternative path.
Like traditionally trained teachers, Îá°®³Ô¹Ï program participants must earn a bachelor’s degree, but it can be in a different field, accommodating for career changes and candidates who have completed dozens of credits toward another degree.

Îá°®³Ô¹Ï's Accelerated Pathway to Become a Certified Teacher
“This will allow people who are interested in going into teaching, and who have a bachelor’s degree already to get into the teaching field. It allows an alternate, or non-traditional route, to get teacher training, instead of the traditional teacher education route,” said Tracey Meyerhoeffer, the chair of the education department at Îá°®³Ô¹Ï.

Îá°®³Ô¹Ï Program Aims to Address Teacher Shortage
The entire program is personalized for each candidate. Some individuals come into the program with a bachelor’s degree in a different field and then the program can help instruct them on the skills needed to go into a classroom. The full certification program includes five modules that will typically take a candidate four semesters plus one summer. Candidates who are already certified and just need to add an endorsement can complete the program in as little as one to two semesters.
