The Importance of Thank You Letters

Writing a thank-you letter to your scholarship donor is a meaningful way to show your appreciation for their support. Your donor has chosen to invest in your education and future, and a heartfelt note lets them know how much their generosity means to you. It’s also a great opportunity to share a little about yourself—your goals, studies, and what the scholarship has helped you achieve.

How to Write a Thank You Letter

  1. Start with a greeting.
Address your donor by name if you know it (for example, Dear Ms. Johnson). If not, you can write Dear Scholarship Donor.
  2. Express your gratitude.
Begin your letter by thanking the donor for the specific scholarship you received. Be sincere and use the full name of the scholarship.
Example: “I am so grateful to be the recipient of the 2025 Smith Family Scholarship.”
  3. Introduce yourself.
Share a few details about yourself—your name, major, year in school, and maybe where you’re from. This helps the donor get to know the person they’re helping.
  4. Describe the impact of the scholarship.
Explain how the scholarship has helped you—such as reducing financial stress, allowing you to focus on your studies, or supporting your involvement in campus activities.
  5. Share your goals.
Tell the donor about your future academic and career goals. Donors appreciate hearing how their generosity supports your dreams.
  6. End with a sincere thank you.
Close your letter by again expressing your appreciation and using a warm closing such as Sincerely or With gratitude, followed by your name.
